REFRACTIVE SURGERIES

  lasik, lyndhurst
Laser vision correction, or refractive surgery, is an area of expertise for the Silverstein practice since the mid-1980s. In fact, both Dr. Rodger Silverstein and Dr. Niki Silverstein remain at the forefront of the technology and are two of the most respected eye surgeons in the State.

Laser refractive surgery can be used to help reduce nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism and reduce or eliminate the need for contacts or glasses. One of our ophthalmologists will determine the refractive procedure, LASIK, or PRK, best suited to your eye physiology and current health status.

Speak to Dr. Rodger Silverstein or Dr. Niki Silverstein about a FREE one-to-one consultation to answer all of your questions about laser vision correction and view an actual video of the procedure.

DISEASES OF THE EYE

  cataract surgery, east rutherford

A cataract is a clouding of the normally clean lens of the eye. When the amount of light that passes through the lens is reduced and scattered by the cataract, images are not correctly focused on the retina at the back of the eye. Cataract formation affects only the lens of the eye and not any of the other important structures, such as the cornea, iris, retina or optic nerve.

The symptoms of a cataract can be any of the following - hazy, blurry or fuzzy vision, double vision or haloes, sensitivity to light and glare, or frequent eyeglass prescription changes. Cataracts cannot be cured by any type of medication, eye exercise, alternative therapy, diet or glasses.

Removal of a cataract is one of the most common surgical ophthalmologic procedures in those over 60 years of age. "No-stitch" cataract surgery, also referred to as "small-incision" cataract surgery or "microsurgery", involves using an instrument called a phacoemulsifier. This produces sound waves which break up the lens into tiny pieces and are vacuumed out through a tiny incision. A new, folded lens is then inserted called an "intraocular lens" (IOL) and is a transparent disk. Most people fitted with IOL's will not need glasses for distance vision. View the press releases: Silverstein Eye offers a Breakthrough for Cataract Patients and SILVERSTEIN EYE brings you new AcrySof Restor® Bifocal Lens Implants. Cataract surgery is usually performed on a one-day, outpatient basis and with "no-stitch" surgery the recovery process is very quick.

  glaucoma treatment, morristown

Glaucoma is a condition in which the normal fluid pressure inside the eye slowly rises as a result of the fluid aqueous humor, which normally flows in and out of the eye, not being able to drain properly. In glaucoma, the fluid collects and causes pressure damage to the optic nerve and loss of vision.

The symptoms of glaucoma in most cases are not easily recognized until the disease begins to cause some loss of vision. These symptoms may include - blurred or narrowed field of vision, severe pain in the eye(s), haloes around lights, nausea, vomiting, and headache.

The diagnosis of glaucoma is made by an ophthalmologist who may perform the following tests - visual acuity, a common eye chart test which measures vision ability at various distances; pupil dilation where the pupil is widened with eye drops to allow a close-up examination of the eye's retina; visual field test which is designed to measure a person's side vision; and tonometry, a standard test to determine the fluid pressure inside the eye.

Macular Degeneration (AMD): Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease that affects your central vision. It is a common cause of vision loss among people over age 60. Because only the center of your vision is usually affected, people rarely go blind from the disease. However, AMD can sometimes make it difficult to read, drive or perform other daily activities. AMD occurs in two forms: dry AMD and wet AMD. Dry AMD, which is most common (90% of cases), happens when slowly, the light sensitive cells in the macula break down. Wet AMD occurs when new blood vessels behind the retina start to grow toward the macula. These new blood vessels are very fragile and very often leak blood and fluid to the macula causing loss of central vision in a very short time.

The symptoms of dry AMD is slightly blurred vision. You may need more light for reading and other tasks. Also, you may find it hard to recognize faces until you are very close to them. As dry AMD worsens, you may see a blurred spot in the center of your vision. The early symptoms of wet AMD are that straight lines appear wavy and rapid loss of central vision. You may even notice a "blind spot".

Currently, there is no treatment for dry AMD. Fortunately, dry AMD develops very slowly. However, most people are able to lead normal, active lives - especially if AMD affects only one eye. Some case of wet AMD can be treated with laser and newer modalities including injections of medication surgery, performed in your eye professional's office, although it is not a cure.

FAMILY / CHILDREN'S CARE

family eye care, paterson

We provide comprehensive eye care to patients of all ages. Our services include not only laser vision correction and small-incision cataract surgery but also treatments for a range of conditions such as glaucoma, the diabetic eye, dry eye and macular degeneration. Regular eye exams are an invaluable tool in maintaining your eyes' health by detecting and preventing disease. Some diseases develop slowly without causing pain or vision loss. Early detection of any problems can reduce the risk of further harm and allow for a choice of treatment options.

Children should have their first eye exam at about age two, although it's never too early to test a child's vision and eye health. Comprehensive eye exams are essential in the diagnosis and treatment of vision problems, injury and disease. Early detection allows for treatment to begin before the child experiences difficulty in school due to poor vision, or before any permanent damage has been done to the eye(s).
